De todos los observadores asiduos de los fenómenos solares es conocida la existencia de regiones de la superficie del Sol que durante largos intervalos de tiempo, a veces muchas rotaciones solares, muestran una acusada actividad, dando lugar a la modulación de 27 días de período conocida ya desde W olfer, en los números relativos de manchas. J. L. Thornsen, por ejemplo, refiriéndose a los datos registrados en el Observatorio de Wellington, Nueva Zelanda, estudia la existencia de un área de máxima actividad centrada aproximadamente en los 180º.
