El poder del Consulado sevillano y los hombres del comercio en el siglo XVII: una aproximación

Abstract

A lo largo del siglo XVII, el Consulado ejerce un fuerte poder en todos los sentidos porque en muchas ocasiones fue este organismo la única fuente de recursos con que contó la Corona para hacer frente a sus muchos problemas. Situación inmejorable para ejercer una férrea supervisión del comercio que derivó en un fraude institucionalizado y en un desplazamiento del control por parte de la Casa de la Contratación hacia el propio Consulado. Veremos a los hombres del comercio sevillano intervenir en todos los ámbitos mercantiles y aún en el último cuarto de siglo, cuando la historiografía más conocida presenta un sombrío y degradado panorama del comercio sevillano, hay datos que hacen suponer que los pocos que quedaban conservaban fuerza suficiente como para ser los responsables absolutos de todo cuanto ocurría en la carrera además de potentes financieros estatales. A examinar las distintas funciones del Consulado y su fuerza en la política comercial española en los siglos XVI y XVII, así como el papel de los hombres del comercio, irán dirigidas las siguientes páginas.
