Abstract

Dada la importancia del siglo XIX dentro de la historia de la biología, nos pareció interesante llevar a cabo una búsqueda de las obras que con el título "Historia Natural" se publicaron en idioma español durante esta centuria. Uno de los objetivos que nos propusimos con ello era observar cómo fueron evolucionando las ideas que en ella se exponían sobre los distintos aspectos de las ciencias naturales. Escogimos el término Historia Natural porque era el que agrupaba el estudio de la botánica, zoología y mineralogía, pues la palabra biología no se utilizó en nuestro país hasta el último cuarto del siglo.

El material recogido ha permitido la elaboración de un repertorio bibliográfico de las Historias Naturales en español del siglo XIX, a partir del cual presentamos en esta comunicación una primera valoración temática. Al mismo tiempo, una estimación del crecimiento de este tipo de obras. Y se apuntan algunas características generales de la destinadas a la enseñanza, por ser éstas las cuantitativamente más numerosas y, por su destino, las más importantes.
