Obispos irlandeses y la monarquía hispánica en el siglo XVI

Abstract

En esta comunicación pretendemos hacer hincapié en la importancia que tuvo el exilio de los obispos irlandeses en la Monarquía hispánica, especialmente de los obispos cuyas sedes habían sido usurpadas por los obispos nominados por Isabel I. El pontificado, al encontrar apoyo en los jesuitas y en Felipe II, quiso que se mantuviera el catolicismo en la isla y pidió al rey que acogiera favorablemente a estos obispos en sus reinos, por lo que estos prelados quedaron en diócesis españolas como obispos auxiliares.

Esta comunicación forma parte del Proyecto de Investigación titulado “Irlandeses en España” en el Trinity College, (2002-2005), dirigido por Ciaran Brady, Declan Downey, Enrique García Hernán y Oscar Recio Morales.
