Abstract

[EN] At the end of 1930 a new section of Palaeontology with a systematic and biological approach was created at the National Museum of Natural Sciences of Madrid (MNCN). The increase, cataloguing and ordering of the Museum¿s fossil collections as a means to facilitate paleontological research was one of its main activities. Acquisitions were registered in the ¿Register book of the Palaeontology section¿, which covers from December 1930 to May 1936. In five and a half years there were 236 records from 100 different people (41 teachers, 39 privates, 11 students and 9 MNCN staff), who provided near 40,000 specimens, mainly from Spain; multiplying by 17 the annual average of the previous period (1911-1930). A grant received in 1934 was the key to this huge increase. Fossil invertebrates accounted for 96.42% and Paleobotany for 0.97%. At present, these two collections contain specimens of almost all the collectors or donors, nevertheless most of these collections remain unpublished. Their complete digitization and documentation is required to make them known and more accessible to scientific and cultural uses.
