The influence of food abundance (predominantly acorns) and habitat complexity on feeding habitat selection was studied in a wintering population of common crane (Grus grus) in Valle de los Pedroches, North Andalucia, Spain. The valley is characterized by a mix of cropland and grassland, with varying densities of oaks [Quercus sp.]. Surveys were conducted in the winter of 1989-90. Habitat type, surface slope, grass height, oak canopy position, and average distance to the nearest and farthest horizon were determined. Flock size in the croplands were not influenced by the amount of seed sown (in early November), although flock size increased with acorn abundance in both areas. Flock size was not correlated with grass canopy height, floor slope, and shortest distance of visibility, but was positively correlated with the longest distance of visibility.
