Flecha del tiempo y rueda de la fortuna

Abstract

Flecha y rueda son las metáforas centrales de las concepciones lineales y ciclicas del tiempo en la cultura occidental. Utilizamos estas dos metáforas para dar cuenta de nuestra experiencia personal del tiempo, de concepciones arraigadas profundamente en nuestra cultura y de algunas teorías de la ciencia contemporánea. Experiencia personal, cultura y ciencia recurren a las mismas metaforas para explicar las dos perspectivas centrales del tiempo: el tiempo que no se detiene y los ciclos de la vida en su constante volver. En la segunda parte del articulo, y utilizando las tradiciones literaria, iconológica y de la filosofía política, se analiza la utilización de la metáfora del reloj en el siglo xvii y los diversos significados de los tres tipos de relojes usuales en la época: el reloj de arena como metáfora de la caducidad del poder, el reloj de sol como símbolo de la subordinación de la política a la religión y el reloj mecánico como expresión de una alegoría clave del estado barroco.
