Los primeros fondos depositaods en el Real Gabinete de Historia Natural de Madrid, creado por carlos III en 1771, procedían de una colección privada. Su propietario, Pedro Franco Dávila, fuen un naturalista ilustrado nacido en la actual República del Ecuador, que asumio el cargo de director tras una larga estancia en París. No se sabe con certeza cuanto queda de aquel "gabinete perdido", pero se han logrado identificar al menos una veintena de piezas entre corales, equinodermos y crustaceos decápodos.
