El texto hebreo del AntiguoTestamento está formado por dos elementos: las letras consonantes y los signos de cantilación (vocales y acentos). Ambos elementos tienen una historia similar: origen plural, selección de un sistema determinado, difusión del mismo y olvido del material no seleccionado.
El análisis de estas fases permite comprender los distintos métodos de edición del texto bíblico hebreo desde el siglo XV hasta nuestros días: ediciones eclécticas, en las que se mezclan variantes de distintos manuscritos, y ediciones diplomáticas, en las que se reproduce uno solo.
