Abstract

Al margen de descubrimientos previos sin repercusión, la iglesia fue descubierta en 1980 por J. Rosco Madmga y M". L. Téllez Jiménez quienes de inmediato pusieron el hecho en conocimiento de S. Andrés Ordax de la Universidad de Extremadura. Pronto, estos descubridores dieron a conocer su hallazgo (Andrés 1981; Téliez, Rosco y Rio-Miranda 1981 y 1982). De modo independiente, L. Caballero Zoreda tuvo noticia enseguida del descubrimiento, pidiendo permiso para su estudio tras una primera visita. Su petición coincidió con el traspaso de competencias a la Junta de Extremadura lo que retrasó el inicio de los trabajos de documentación arquitectónica y de excavación arqueológica hasta 1984, que se prolongó en campañas sucesivas hasta 1989 consecutivamente codirigidas con J. Rosco, J. C. Sánchez Santos y A. Martín López. Declarada Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Blanco 1982 y 1983) y reconocida su importancia excepcional, se iniciaron también los trabajos de restauración. Tras una breve intervención de J. García Collado, la dirección de los trabajos se encomendó a los arquitectos A. Almagro Gorbea en colaboración con P. Latorre Gouzález-Moro y L. Cámara Mnñoz en quienes recayó la dirección definitiva de unos trabajos que todavía no han finalizado pero que ya han asegurado la supervivencia y la comprensión del monumento (Almago, Caballero, Cámara y Latorre 1992; Aímagro, Cámara y Latorre en Caballero y Sáez 1999: 291-322). La memoria de excavación se publica en 1999 (Caballero y Sáez 1999).
