Cambios en el comportamiento del crustáceo Artemia provocados por cestodos alteran la firma isotópica del huésped

Abstract

Hasta el momento, estudios sobre las relaciones tróficas entre huésped y parásitos usando marcadores isotópicos son muy escasos. En el presente estudio usamos análisis de isótopos estables de Nitrógeno y Carbono para testar la hipótesis de que cambios en el comportamiento del crustaceo Artemia provocados por parásitos cestodos altera el consumo de recursos del huésped. Flamingolepis liguloides (Cestoda, Cyclophyllidae) afecta a la distribución espacial de su huésped intermediario Artemia parthenogenetica, con el fin de alcanzar al huésped definitivo, el flamenco. Los resultados de este estudio muestran que los cestodos inducen fuertes cambios en la firma isotópica de Artemia, y que los crustáceos infectados y no infectados no son equivalentes desde un punto de vista trófico, ya sea como consumidores o como presas para las aves. Las firmas isotópicas de individuos infectados estuvieron enriquecidas respecto a huéspedes no infectados, variando el grado de enriquecimiento con la carga parasitaria. Cisticercoides aislados de F. liguloides estuvieron significativamente enriquecidos en C comparado con huéspedes infectados y no infectados. Sin embargo, contrariamente a lo esperado, no estuvieron enriquecidos en N. Estos resultados ilustran el modo en que los parásitos cestodos pueden alterar las redes tróficas y subrayan la importancia de considerar el estatus parasitario en los estudios de ecología trófica en humedales salinos.
