Hidrogeología y servicios ambientales de los humedales del Ozama, República Dominicana

Abstract

Los humedales se encuentran entre los ecosistemas más productivos del mundo. Proveen servicios que son fundamentales para la salud y al bienestar humano, tales como: la producción de alimentos y materias primas, depuración de aguas, control de inundaciones, reposición de aguas subterráneas, entre otros. El programa de Naciones Unidas Evaluación de los Ecosistemas del Milenio (EEM), llevada a cabo por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas entre 2001 y 2005 puso de manifiesto que uno de los ecosistemas sometidos a mayor estrés en todo el mundo eran los humedales, a pesar de los beneficios que generan. A nivel mundial, los humedales brindan gratuitamente todos los años servicios valorados en billones de dólares americanos. En una gran mayoría de humedales las aguas subterráneas juegan un papel a veces fundamental y cuanto menos relevante en el funcionamiento delos humedales y en los servicios que estos proveen.
