Actividad tectónica en la Cordillera Septentrional de la República Dominicana: indicadores geomorfológicos y análisis del patrón de la red de drenaje

Abstract

En este trabajo, que forma parte de un Proyecto FONDOCYT, se analiza el relieve de la Cordillera Septentrional, el Valle del Cibao y la vertiente norte de la Cordillera Central de la República Dominicana. Se busca establecer la influencia de la tectónica en la configuración actual del relieve a partir del estudio de las características geomorfológicas y morfotectónicas de los frentes montañosos asociados a fallas, así como de las cuencas de drenaje asociadas a dichos frentes. El objetivo final del estudio es la reducción de la amenaza y el riesgo sísmico en la Cordillera y su entorno. Como punto de partida se ha confeccionado un mapa compuesto por la geología, mapa tectónico y mapa de procesos activos obtenidos a partir del Programa SYSMIN (1999-2011). Teniendo en cuenta el contexto regional de la Cordillera Septentrional, su evolución tectónica y climática, además de la litología que presenta, se observa que estos factores han influenciado en la evolución del relieve desde el Mioceno Superior hasta la actualidad.
