[EN] After a decade-long expansive economic cycle, the remarkable rise of the Latin American middle class has been widely interpreted as a promising sign for the future of the region. This article provides data on the evolution of the middle classes to shed light and investigate clues of the causes and factors which contributed to said expansion, while also reflects upon the characteristics and aspirations of the emerging middle classes. It then analyses the socio-political consequences of this phenomenon. The paper concludes with an observation on the problems faced by emerging middle classes in the pursuit of their perceived interests and choice of political parties, as well as the challenge it poses for the new governments of the region in a context of economic stagnation.
