Hasta hace dos décadas se aceptaba que las únicas células excitables eran las nerviosas, las musculares y algunas células sensoriales. En la actualidad se sabe que la mayor parte de las células endocrinas que incluyen en este grupo. Las células adrenocorticales, adenohipofisarias, cromafines, secretoras de calcitonina, de renina y pancreáticas son también excitables, es decir, son capaces de generar potenciales de acción y de modificar su potencial de membrana en respuesta a la presencia de secretagogos.
