En su acepción general hidalgo era toda persona perteneciente al estamento inferior de la nobleza y, de manera más restringida y según el Diccionario de la Real Academia, hidalgo de ejecutoria era quien había litigado su hidalguía mediante carta ejecutoria. El reconocimiento de hidalguía mediante ejecutoria emitida en la Reales Chancillerías de Ciudad Real, Granada y Valladolid llevaba consigo la exención de pagos en los impuestos municipales, implicando, por lo tanto, un interés económico.
