Abstract

[EN] The fungus Neotyphodium coenophialum infects tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) plants. During their life cycle the infected plants do not show any obvious sign of infection. This endophytic fungus in vertically transmitted by seed, and infected plants contain alkaloids which are toxic to herbivores. The comsumption of infected tall fescue by cattle and horses is associated to fescue toxicosis. In order to determine if N. coenophialum was present in seeds of forage cultivars of tall fescue, 13 cultivars were analyzed. Neotyphodium mycelium was detected in seeds of four cultivars. The levels of infection in these cultivars ranged from 17 to 72 p. 100 of the seeds. These results indicate that the seed of these cultivars was likely produced by infected plants.
