Abstract

[EN] : This article analyzes the opinion that foreign residents and visitors -diplomats, merchants, professionals and travelers- expressed about the role played by religious orders in the Philippines during the Spanish rule. To this end, the paper poses the following questions: How did the foreigners see the missionaries present in the islands? What assessment did they make of their work within the colonial framework, as agents of colonization? To what extent did they consider that the religious orders conditioned the development of the colonial administration, endowing it with unique characters compared to other colonial models? Did they think that the presence of the missionaries complicated the development of the colonizing action? If not, did they consider that it was a positive element that could facilitate colonization, or relationships between colonizers or colonized? In order to draw that external view on the religious orders, reports from consuls destined in the Archipelago and memoirs written by travelers and residents in the Philippines in the 19th century are used.
