Abstract

Heterocysts are nitrogen-fixing specialized cells that appear at semiregular intervals along cyanobacterial filaments upon nitrogen starvation. The differentiation and patterning of heterocysts is a model for the study of cell differentiation in multicellular prokaryotes.
