Abstract

El interés de las grandes potencias por Filipinas coincidió con el incremento de la expansión occidental por Asia y el Pacífico. La obligada apertura de China y de Japón, el asentamiento europeo en el sudeste asiático y en puertos de especial importancia estratégica, la penetración en los mercados regionales, la inauguración de nuevas rutas de comunicación y los adelantos técnicos que permitían desplazamientos más rápidos y seguros impulsaron el interés por el área y, en ese contexto, también por el archipiélago filipino, estratégicamente situado. En aquel momento, Gran Bretaña tenía un gran imperio que iba desde la India hasta el norte de Borneo, así como diversos grupos de islas en el Pacífico; Francia se había asegurado Indochina, así como las islas de la Polinesia; Alemana estaba desarrollando una política de expansión mundial que la había llevado hasta Nueva Guinea y Samoa y buscaba penetrar en China; Rusia seguía su expansión hacia Manchuria y Corea y Japón se había anexionado recientemente la isla de Formosa, muy cerca de la colonia española que, ambicionada por todos ellos se hallaba en el ojo del huracán. Solo faltaban los Estados Unidos, cuyos intereses en China exigían una base cercana y, por ello, acabarían convirtiéndose en el actor fundamental de la pérdida de esta colonia, atacada y anexionada con ocasión de la Guerra Hispano-Norteamericana ante la pasividad de las demás potencias.
