Si exceptuamos el período de la Haskalah o Ilustración del judaísmo alemán, ningún otro momento de la historia experimentó un encuentro tan productivo con la nueva sociedad de la diáspora como el judaísmo helenístico. Los judíos helenísticos se sintieron atraídos a la órbita de la cultura griega, tradujeron por primera vez la Biblia al griego y ensayaron prácticamente todos los géneros de la literatura griega.
