A principios del siglo XX algunos destacados intelectuales americanos y españoles iniciaron un diálogo abierto entre ambas orillas. La cultura, la educación y la ciencia fueron los puntos de partida para reconocerse, detectar problemas, aproximar posiciones y plantear proyectos comunes. Pedro Henríquez Ureña fue una figura importante en la creación de las redes culturales entre España e Hispanoamérica que vertebraron una comunidad intelectual dinámica. Su estudio lo realizamos a partir de la correspondencia mantenida con intelectuales hispanoamericanos y, fundamentalmente, con españoles: José Enrique Rodó, Alfonso Reyes, Amado Alonso, Federico de Onís, Daniel Cosío Villegas, Ramón Menéndez Pidal, Tomás Navarro Tomás, entre otros. A través de sus cartas recuperamos los circuitos por los que transitó el conocimiento, que forjaron puentes de cultura
