Abstract

[EN] Unlike other parts of the country, western Ethiopia lacks a monumental heritage that can be used to attract tourists and promote economic development. However, there are other ways through which the social sciences may improve welfare. In this paper we describe how our research on the history and culture of ethnic minorities might be helpful in convincing the local administrations of recognizing those minorities and their idiosyncrasies. At the same time, we believe that a more precise knowledge of the different communities contributes to overcome misunderstandings and conflicts between them and, ultimately, allows the marginalized communities to preserve their cultural heritage and improve their welfare.
