Seguimos utilizando la red de plancton, venerable ingenio de más de un siglo de existencia y de eficacia probadamente dudosa; conocemos algo, no mucho, de la fisiología de un reducido número de especies, la mayoría de las cuales son propias de aguas costeras; en la rutina de las campañas oceanográficas, las operaciones destinadas a obtener datos sobre la distribución del plancton son, por lo regular, inadecuadas e insuficientes.
