La utopía americana

Abstract

La ponencia intenta dar respuesta a la pregunta de si existe una utopía americana. Partiendo de la discusión sobre el concepto mismo de utopía, se plantea cómo ese concepto nació estrechamente ligado al continente americano; y se exploran los caminos por los que, históricamente, el vínculo entre América y la utopía se mantuvo a lo largo de los siglos (en lo literario, en el planeamiento urbano, en el ámbito de los proyectos políticos-sociales, en la fundación de comunidades alternativas y en el campo de las migraciones). Se presta atención particular a una utopía prácticamente olvidada, que fue la de la unidad continental, puesto que en ella se reunían todos los elementos del utopismo genuinamente americano (latinoamericano, iberoamericano e hispanoamericano); y, por la misma razón, los proyectos de integración del continente deben ponerse en el centro de esta cuestión como la utopía más propiamente americana. Con ese recorrido, la ponencia reivindica la relevancia del utopismo latinoamericano como una tradición enormemente rica, que tiene sus características propias que la distinguen de otras tradiciones culturales: una tradición que ha seguido alimentado el imaginario de otras regiones del mundo hasta la actualidad
