Composición química elemental en cocolitóforos

Abstract

Los cocolitóforos son un importante grupo de fitoplancton que tiene la característica de secretar plaquitas calcáreas. Esta particularidad les confiere una considerable importancia en los ciclos biogeoquímicos, especialmente en el del carbono. Estos organismos presentan ciclos de vida de gran complejidad; una determinada especie puede presentar fases con cocolitos de diferente forma de cristalización e incluso fases sin cocolitos. Se denominan holococolitos los cocolitos formados por microcristales euhedrales y heterococolitos los compuestos por elementos estructurados. Las fases portadoras de holococolitos son haploides y suelen habitar en las capas más superficiales de la columna de agua mientras que los heterococolitos adornan fases diploides que se encuentran típicamente en aguas más profundas. En la presente comunicación presentamos un estudio, realizado mediante la técnica de microanálisis por rayos X, de la composición elemental de especímenes pertenecientes a diferentes grupos del fitoplancton, con especial atención al grupo de los cocolitóforos. Se han observado claras diferencias entre especímenes con cocolitos de diferente tipo de cristalización. Es de destacar el mayor contenido en magnesio de los especímenes con holococolitos y la variabilidad de la proporción de fósforo en los diferentes especímenes analizados
