Construir el futuro con imágenes: la aventura utópica de Nueva Babilonia (Comunicación de congreso)

Abstract

El artista holandés Constant Nieuwenhuys (1920-2005) concibió entre 1956 y 1974 la utopía de un futuro en el que el trabajo hubiera desaparecido como elemento central de la organización social. El hábitat que ideó para esa humanidad liberada de la obligación de trabajar, al que llamó Nueva Babilonia, estaba pensado para facilitar la libertad de movimientos, el encuentro entre los diferentes y el despliegue sin límites de la creatividad y el juego. Aunque diseñó cuidadosamente el nuevo tipo de sociedad (mediante artículos, conferencias y textos bien documentados) y su soporte material (mediante planos, dibujos y maquetas), aquel planteamiento revolucionario no encontró eco entre los arquitectos y urbanistas de su tiempo. Tras el fracaso de la revuelta estudiantil de 1968, con cuyo espíritu sintonizaba, Constant volvió a la pintura, convencido de que ese futuro mejor que proponía solo podía evocarse mediante imágenes plásticas que incitaran a desearlo. La experiencia y las obras de Constant, efectivamente, evocan en nosotros la reflexión sobre la utopía y la relación que mantiene con las imágenes
