Abstract

The nature of the limit of the continental margins, whether in the form of Continent Ocean Boundaries (COB) or Continent Ocean Transitions (COT), is key to unravel their current state and geodynamic evolution. Due to the uncertainty associated with the geophysical data used to model continental margins, multiple models can lead to realistic interpretations of different margin types (COT or COB) in the same region. An example of this is found in the Eastern India margin, which has been subject of multiple margin type interpretations (Eagles et al., 2015). Here, we explore the variability in interpretations of a seismic section from the Eastern India margin, carried out by different independent groups of interpreters in a controlled experiment. The results of this interpretation experiment, namely the interpretation of the faults, the basement and the Moho locations were digitalised for comparison and sorted by margin type (COT or COB). Our results of the interpretations indicate that continental margins cannot be defined as single deterministic models (either COT or COB), but rather as a ranges of possible models.
