Abstract

[EN] Hydrography of ria Pontevedra (NW Spain)with special mention of placeres bank- The positive estuarine circulation of the ria of Pontevedra is controlled by the balance of forces between the deep offshore water (N A C W) and runoff When the offshore water is situaied at sutch a level that il can enter the ria. river discharge is reduced. During transition periods, when the balance of forces is changing. a cyclonic gyre located in the center of the ria mixes offshore and surface water. The iner zone of the ria has a complex hydrographic regime. Here salt water, fresh water and factory eflluents meet. This complexity is magnified on the Placeres Bank. where the flood gives rise to a tidal front and an associated lateral circulation.
