Abstract

{ENG}The purpose of this work was to evaluate and compare the CO2 (EC) emission rate in volcanic soils in natural ecosystems and tepetates fitted out for agricultural production, managed with various alternative systems. The study was carried out in two places of the Neovolcanic Axis of Mexico: a toposequence in the Tláloc-Telapón volcano (State of Mexico) and some tepetate plots fitted out for agriculture in Tlalpan (State of Tlaxlaca). The EC and soil moisture (HV) were measured in situ from September 2005 (rainy season) to January 2006 (dry season). These parameters were also correlated with the soil organic carbon (SOC) and the activity of ß-glucosidasa. The EC fell from the months of heavy rains (September and October) to the driest months (December and January), as well as the HV. In the natural ecosystems the highest EC was registered in the best preserved area, and the lowest EC in the degraded area, where the content of SOC and the activity of ß-glucosidasa presented the smallest values. In the cultivated tepetates the EC is lower in the plots showing a smaller concentration of SOC. The EC gradually increased with the years of cultivation and was bigger in the agricultural systems where C was added to the system.
