El desarrollo de técnicas de análisis genómico ha puesto de manifiesto que la transferencia horizontal o lateral de genes (HGT o LGT) ha jugado un importante papel en la evolución del mundo vivo, principalmente de los procariotas (bacterias y arqueas) pero también en la evolución de los eucariotas, contribuyendo a la adquisición de rasgos concretos que habrían facilitado adaptaciones fisiológicas importantes para la diversificación de estos grupos.
