Abstract

La expedición al Pacífico (1862-1866) fue la primera expedición científica española que incluyó entre sus miembros a un fotógrafo. El gobierno de Isabel II había organizado el envío de una escuadra naval en visita de buena voluntad a la costa americana del Pacífico con el objetivo de estrechar lazos con las jóvenes repúblicas americanas, así como defender los intereses de los españoles residentes en América. Sin embargo, en el último momento se decidió incorporar a la expedición una Comisión científica y a Mariano de la Paz Graells, Director en del Museo de Ciencias Naturales se le debe la idea de incorporar a la expedición a un fotógrafo.La Comisión quedó finalmente integrada por cinco científicos: Patricio M. Paz y Membiela, Fernando Amor y Mayor, Francisco de Paula Martínez y Sáez, Marcos Jiménez de la Espada, Manuel Almagro y Vega Juan Isern y Batlló, y dos auxiliares: Bartolomé Puig y Galup y Rafael Castro Ordóñez, el fotógrafo. Los expedicionarios partieron de Cádiz el 10 de agosto de 1862 en la fragata Triunfo que junto con la Resolución, y la fragata Covadonga que se incorporó posteriormente, recorrieron Brasil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Panamá y llegaron hasta California. Sin embargo, no siempre los comisionados realizaron el mismo itinerario.
