La colección de Bellas Artes

Abstract

Durante el siglo XVIII el coleccionismo, además de centrarse en las Bellas Artes y Artes Decorativas como en siglos anteriores, incide, en mayor medida, en el acopio de elementos de Historia Natural (Bolaños, 1997). Esta tendencia es propia del contexto ilustrado. Ejemplo de esta actividad la encontramos en don Pedro Franco Dávila, primer director del Real Gabinete de Historia Natural (RGHN), muchas de cuyas piezas había traído de su residencia de París en época del rey Carlos III (1716-1788), quien coleccionaba también objetos pertenecientes a las Bellas Artes, incluidas Artes Decorativas (Calatayud, 1987; Franco Dávila, 1767; Villena et al., 2008). Es este el motivo de que obras que parecieran no corresponder a los fondos de un museo de ciencias naturales, se conserven en el nuestro, en concreto en la colección de Bellas Artes del MNCN, lo que constituye un valioso documento y representación del devenir histórico del MNCN.
