La Unión Europea tiene 57 millones de personas de edad (1995) y en los próximos decenios esta cifra aumentará considerablemente. Este envejecimiento es un efecto de la transición demográfica, y más concretamente de profundos cambios en los comportamientos reproductores. Sus consecuencias son numerosas, pero afectan sobre todo a la economía en sentido amplio (ahorro, consumo, número de hogares, etc.), a la protección social (gasto público), a la solidaridad intergeneracional y a la familia. Este trabajo presta atención a algunas cuestiones básicas de la protección social y de la asistencia familiar a los mayores.
