Abstract

[EN]: Fertility declined sharply throughout the twentieth century in most of Western Europe. In Spain, the downward slope was particularly steep from the mid-seventies to the midnineties, tumbling to levels below the replacement rate. Although the number of births has risen slightly in recent years, this may be related more or less directly to immigration, since the contribution made by foreign mothers to the total number of births has increased substantially in the last few years. At the same tiem, the mean age at first birth has climbed while the number of higher order births, i.e., three or more,, has plunged, with first -and second- order births accounting for 90% of all fertility in 2000, compared to 66% in 1975.
