Abstract

Klettert der winzig kleine Känguru-Embryo nach der Geburt selbstständig in den Beutel? Oder setzt ihn die Mutter mit Hilfe ihrer Lippen dort hinein, wie Richard Owen mutmaßte? Das gesamte 19. Jahrhundert hindurch mühten sich europäische Zoologen das Rätsel der Känguru-Geburt zu lösen. Das Aufkommen des Zoos ermöglichte es zumindest prinzipiell, das Problem durch Beobachtung anzugehen. Tierwärter wurden angewiesen, die Kängurus Tag und Nacht zu observieren. Aber die praktischen Schwierigkeiten erwiesen sich als enorm. Im zweiten Teil des Vortrags werden die zoo-basierten Untersuchungen mit den Beobachtungen von Jägern und Tierhändlern im australischen Busch kontrastiert. Die Känguru-Geburt war um 1900 in der australischen Öffentlichkeit zu einem viel diskutierten Thema geworden. Dabei traten auch die Spannungen und Asymmetrien zwischen dem "Wissenschaftszentrum" Europa und der "Peripherie" der australischen Kolonie zu Tage. Wie zirkulierten Informationen über die Reproduktion von Beuteltieren zwischen den Kontinenten? Und von wem wurde das Rätsel letztlich gelöst?
