Visigodos y Omeyas. El territorio

Abstract

[EN]: This annex of Archivo Español de Arqueología [Spanish Archive of Archaeology] includes contributions that were presented to the scientific meeting, under the same heading as the volume's title, held at the Merida Institute of Archaeology in December 2008. These comprise studies of population settlements in Hispania in late antiquity and the early medieval, and reconstruct their formation using data from excavations and archaeological surveys. Research into rural villages indirectly reveals the transformation of the countryside that took place in the period of transition between late antiquity and the early Middle Ages, the situation of the peasantry and characteristics of the areas used for crop and livestock production. The analysis of other models of settlement, such as in the territory of Toledo, based on remains of decorative sculpture, allows us, at least in its broad outlines, to understand the urban features of the urbs regia, the ancient capital of the Visigothic kingdom.
