Abstract

[EN] The study of the many orchards that surrounded Marrakesh throughout its history, through the analysis of literary sources, is an arduous task that we actually start with this work, being aware that the results we offer still represent an incomplete vision. The great role of this city, due to the status of capital that it held several times, explains the rich corpus of medieval documents available that, from the sixteenth century onwards, increased with others texts produced in various Western languages. Even bearing in mind the fact that we still need to explore many archives, documents analysed are enough to define the main functions of these estates: production, leisure, protocol and residency. The latter regards their use as a temporary, or seasonal, home for their owners, because of their proximity to the city. These exceptional agricultural estates, located in the large plain that surrounds Marrakesh, were considered by all as a sign of prestige and manifestation of the power of their landlords. In contrast to archaeological sources, texts offer a different type of information that enriches our knowledge, because they shine a light on aspects as diverse as the date of foundation, the identity of their owners, the ceremonies and celebrations that were held there, the vegetable species that were cultivated or the different Arabic terms that were used to refer to them.
