Abstract

[EN] This article analyzes the biographical and scientific trajectory of José Clavijo y Fajardo, since his arrival at the Real Gabinete de Historia Natural, in 1777, at the beginning of this institution. This work provided him knowledges to use the scientific vocabulary in several languages and to look for the equivalents in Spanish. He made a dictionary of Natural History and also he was the translator of the Buffon’s Natural History. The Clavijo’s lexicographic work began with a practical purpose. He thought that these studies could be useful for his work in the Real Gabinete. His studies were always impregnated with an enlightened mentality. The principal goal of Clavijo was contribute to the advancement of the sciences. In this way, he developed a specialized terminology in Spanish to Natural History. He established the relations between the new denominations and those of the Latin and French traditions. He attempted to do it through his Ensayo de un vocabulario de Historia Natural. The draft of this manuscript is located in the Real Academia Española.

[ES] En este artículo se analiza la trayectoria biográfica y científica de José Clavijo y Fajardo, desde su llegada al Real Gabinete de Historia Natural en 1777, en los inicios de esta institución. Esta actividad le condujo a manejar el vocabulario científico en varios idiomas y a buscar los equivalentes en castellano, hasta realizar un diccionario de historia natural, como labor previa a su trabajo como traductor de la Historia Natural del conde de Buffon. La labor lexicográfica de Clavijo comenzó con una finalidad práctica, como auxiliar de su actividad en el Real Gabinete. Sus estudios siempre estuvieron impregnados de su mentalidad ilustrada. Clavijo buscaba contribuir al avance de las ciencias, dotando a la Historia Natural de una terminología especializada en español. Para ello fijó la correspondencia entre las nuevas denominaciones y las de la tradición latina y francesa, algo que intentó a través de su Ensayo de un vocabulario de Historia Natural, cuyo borrador se encuentra en la Real Academia Española.
