Diderot contra el colonialismo y las tiranías

Abstract

A Diderot se le trataba en términos políticos con cierta condescendencia. Después de todo, se creía que él no había escrito nada equivalente al Espíritu de las leyes de Montesquieu o al Contrato social de Rousseau. Estas contribuciones a la Historia de las dos Indias publicadas anónimamente hacen ver que no es así, como también lo testimoniaban algunas obras publicadas que Diderot publicó en vida, como la Refutación de Helvecio o el Ensayo sobre Séneca. Diderot, admirador de Montesquieu, define la ley como su maestra en el artículo «Legislación» de la Enciclopedia, es decir, es de los primeros intelectuales en pedir la separación de poderes y la monarquía constitucional. En otros artículos acuña el concepto de voluntad general que suele atribuirse erróneamente a Rousseau, seculariza el concepto de ciudadano, habla de la desigualdad en las ciudades y afirma taxativamente que «nadie ha recibido de la naturaleza el derecho de mandar sobre otros». Todas estas ideas, que habían acompañado a Diderot desde siempre, eclosionan en sus contribuciones políticas a la Historia de las dos Indias traducidas aquí por primera vez en español.
