Long-range atmospheric transport and fate of persistent organic pollutants in remote mountain areas

Abstract

In the present study the role of the atmosphere in the distribution of POP in remote mountain areas is exainined as weli as the accumulation and fate of these compounds in soiis and high mountain lalre sediments. Studies on POP levels in h e subtropical uoposphere of Tenerife and the European high mountain atmosplieres of the Central Pyrenees and the High Tatras have been perfomed. They are in the lower range of those found in other remote atmospheres. Their concentrations are generaiiy similar at aii sites indicating that they are weli mixed throughout the atinosphere. Long-range amospheric transpon (LRAV is therefore the most likely principal transfer mechanism. Besides active HiVol-sampling, passive air sampling techniques, iike pine needles from Pinu uninata and semi-permeable membrane devices (SPMDs), have also beei~u sed to study the spatial and temporal distribution of organochloriiie compounds in the Central Pyrenees.

Air-soii PAH partirioning has been studied in Tenerife. The results point to soot-carbon sorption as h e inain mechanism for the transfer of PAH to the soii sites above the inversion layer. In the European high mountains soiis POP reflect weli the composition in aerosois but hey are better preserved in the sediments of the lakes from these high mountains. Vertical profiles of sediment cores show a significant POP increase at the end of the second half o6 the 20" century, when production and use of these compounds staxted to be iiitensive. A significant decline of concentrations has been observed in the last years which could reflect cleaner air policies and improved combustion techniques.

[EN] Persistent organic poliutants (POP) such as HCB, PCDs, DD'Ts, HCHs, endosulphanes and PAHs are widespread througl~out the world surface. These compounds were synthesised to benefit human development but their toxicity, hydrophobicity and resistance to biological, chemicai and physical breakdown was not initiaiiy considered.
