The Concept of Disability as Functional Diversity

Abstract

[EN] In this poster we analyze an approach that consider disability as the gap between the environment demands and the body abilities into a lineal directed hierarchical scale of functioning levels. The strategies to cover this gap are aimed to a double goal: on the one hand by using technical aids to increase the body function abilities; on the other hand by putting into practice the universal design philosophy which pursue reduce the level of functioning demanded by the environment. By the combination of both strategies the elimination of this functional gap is pursued. We defend the necessity of a new approach to agency based on an alternative model, non hierarchical nor directed, focused on diversity of possible functioning as different ways through which body and environment interact in a symmetric manner. Within this approach, when we refer to the body, in the case of people with disability, we assume “functional diversity” as the basic characteristic of these bodies, not its dis-functionality or dis-ability, as it is usually considered. They are bodies that function and act differently than other bodies more closely identified with normative patterns of functioning.
