Un modelo geodinámico para el volcanismo Neógeno del Sureste Ibérico

Abstract

La naturaleza y la distribución espacial de las rocas volcánicas neógenas del sureste ibérico, con respecto a la megaestructura que representa la Falla de Palomares (FP), sugieren que aquellas se han generado por un mecanismo de fractura y deslizamiento, semejante al propuesto experimentalmente por Moss y Gupta (1982). De acuerdo con este modelo, el volcanismo de esta región, está relacionado con un episodio dextral frágil de la FP, que se ha desarrollado en tres fases. En una 1º fase se produce un deslizamiento dextral a través del plano de la FP, con una inmersión de unos 20º hacia el S, que da lugar a la generación de las rocas calco-alcalinas del sector de Cabo de Gata y a las calcoalcalinas potásicas y shoshoníticas del sector de Mazarrón-Cartagena. En una 2º fase, de características semejantes a la anterior, pero con movimiento horizontal, se originan nuevas erupciones volcánicas en el sector de Cabo de Gata, actualmente erosionadas, y las rocas más tardías del sector de Mazarrón-Cartagena. Finalmente, durante la 3º fase, de intensidad muy reducida, se originan las rocas shoshopíticas y ultrapotásicas del área de Vera.
