Abstract

Abstract: Additive manufacturing of metallic materials require long manufacturing times to obtain advanced pieces for the aeronautical, aerospace and biomedical industry. In addition, it is essential a continuous mechanical properties characterization. In this regard, miniaturized mechanical tests are employed to optimize time, resources and volume of material employed in the mechanical characterization. A versatile, promising, increasingly used miniaturized mechanical test is the Small Punch Test (SPT). However, the correlations between mechanical SPT and conventional tensile test parameters are imprecise due to the SPT complexity. In this thesis, a new instability criterion has been proposed to determine the onset of plastic instability. Besides, unique calculations of the instantaneous strain rate during SPT, a new methodology to estimate the proper load vs. plastic displacement curve, and a new geometric configuration of SPT, named SPT-IP, have been developed. Finally, the proposed miniaturized configuration SPT-IP improves the accuracy in the determination of the yield strength.
