Minería urbana: ¿realidad o leyenda?

Abstract

En el siglo XVII, durante la revolución científica, ya se fabricaban máquinas industriales, como los digestores a vapor (precursores de la máquina de vapor). Para su producción se utilizaban tan solo tres elementos químicos: hierro, carbono y calcio, aprovechando los nuevos métodos de producción de acero. Con el avance de la sociedad, hemos ido incorporado nuevos elementos de la tabla periódica que fue desarrollada por Dimitri Mendeléyev hace más de 150 años. En el s. XVIII se introdujeron el estaño, el wolframio, el cobre y también el manganeso y el plomo. Hoy la lista de elementos que forman parte de nuestro desarrollo industrial y de nuestro entorno y que facilitan nuestra calidad de vida supone casi la totalidad de la tabla periódica. Lo anterior es un indicativo del aumento exponencial de la cantidad y variedad de materiales usados por la sociedad, de la existencia de muchos más elementos en cada producto y de la utilización de mezclas complejas de elementos. Llegados a este punto, podríamos preguntarnos: ¿hay suficientes minerales concentrados en la naturaleza para abastecer la demanda creciente?
