Abstract

Cada día es más evidente la necesidad de conservación del medio natural, quedando relegado a un segundo plano la obtención de mayor cantidad de productos agropecuarios. En estos momentos, la situación de muchas zonas de montaña del área mediterránea, se caracterizan por una invasión progresiva del matorral en áreas tradicionalmente de pastos, como consecuencia del despoblamiento y consiguiente reducción de los censos de animales domésticos. Como resultado final se produce una degeneración del paisaje, dando lugar en muchos casos a numerosos incendios forestales que, año tras año, asolan los países mediterráneos. La conservación del medio natural lleva consigo la utilización de los herbívoros en pastoreo para el control de la vegetación. Para una adecuada utilización de animales en pastoreo, tenemos que tener en cuenta no sólo los herbívoros domésticos, sino también los salvajes (ciervo, corzo, rebeco, cabra montés, muflón, etc.) y para ello es necesario conocer, entre otros factores, aspectos relacionados con su fisiología digestiva, que nos permitan desarrollar sistemas alternativos de producción animal, rentable ecológica y económicamente, que serán los únicos viables en muchas zonas marginales (Gordon y Lindsay, 1990, Milne, 1990).
