Abstract

[EN] The Toledo Mountains’ landscape, in central Spain, is dominated by typical Mediterranean climate and vegetation. However, the presence of species such as birch or hazelnut in certain habitats is striking. Both of them are relict species only present in humid refugia through the Toledo Mountains. Currently those sites are affected directly and indirectly by human impact endangering those species. In this paper we analyse these facts from a temporal perspective through the study of the palaeoenvironmental record of some mires of these mountains, detailing the Holocene history of birch and hazel.
