Amirs and caliphs took part in some of them as well as members of the Cordovan upper class. However, these celebrations never became an integral part of courtly culture, which was more dominated by ceremonial aspects. It was only during the late caliphal period that a new courtly culture emerged; a culture that was dominated by a celebration of pleasant life and a distinctive set of elements, which included debauchery
