Abstract

[eng] A total of 17 submerged cave systems of the Cabrera archipelago are briefly described, highlighting their main characteristics, and a list of the habitats of the semi-dark and dark caves of the archipelago. The differences between the caves depend on the intrinsic characteristics of each cave. The spatial and seasonal variation of several functional and structural parameters has been studied in the habitat of semi-dark caves of Sa Cova Blava, and there is very little variation between the external part and the internal part. The presence of 7 species of fish, some of which are typically cavernous, is mentioned for the first time in the archipelago of Cabrera. The structural bryozoans Schizotheca serratimargo and Reptadeonella spp. Show a strong inter-annual dynamic, whose causes are totally unknown. In this chapter a special mention is made of the new discoveries on the ecology of the slipper lobster, Scyllarides latus, whose reproduction is totally linked to caves. The characterization of the annual dynamics of temperature in the caves points towards a greater stability compared to the outside and could explain the preference of the slipper lobsters for these environments. The caves of the Cabrera archipelago have a high morphological diversity and shelter fragile, singular and little-known habitats, with an essential importance for the presence of many unique species. It is proposed to deepen on the study of these systems in the archipelago and to carry out an assessment in terms of ecological quality based on a future monitoring and implementation of the Marine Strategies Directive.
