Abstract

Azkeneko hamarkadan, material artifizialen garapenari esker, posible bilakatu da errefrakzio-indize negatibodun materialak (EINM) sortzea. Material hauek batera izan behar dituzte permitibitate elektriko negatiboa eta iragazkortasun magnetiko negatiboa, maiztasun tarte batean. Era naturalean agertzen diren materialek errefrakzio-indize positiboa dute, baina V.G. Veselago fisikariak errefrakzio-indize negatiboaren posibilitatea eta haren ondorio fisiko interesgarriak aztertu zituen aurreko mendearen 60. hamarkadan. Dena den, posibilitate hori baztertuta egon zen 2000. urtera bitartean. Orduan J.B. Pendry fisikariak lehenego EINM materiala proposatu zuen eta interesa berpiztu zuen, konturatu baitzen horrelako materialaz egindako leiarraren bereizmena handia izango litzatekeela ——argiaren uhin-luzeraren azpikoa—— eta horregatik superleiarra deritzo horrelako materialaz egindako leiarrari. Azkeneko hamarkadan errefrakzio-indize negatibodun material batzuk ——metamaterialak—— diseinatu eta eraiki dira eta agerian jarri dira propietate optiko bitxiak ere. Gainera, fotonikaren munduan leiho berriak zabaldu dira material hauekin.
